Rural Organizing Statement on Donald Trump’s Visit to East Palestine, Ohio

The following is a statement from Matt Hildreth, Executive Director of Rural Organizing:

Here we go again: Donald Trump stunt-exploiting rural communities so he can extract their votes. Exploit and extract is the way Republicans and corporate billionaires have treated rural communities for decades.

Trump had four years as president to do right by rural America — two of them with a Republican-controlled Congress ready and willing to do his bidding. If he really cared about rural America, he would have invested in our communities instead of multinational ag conglomerates, infrastructure wouldn’t have been a running joke, and he wouldn’t have tried to destroy the U.S. Postal Service. He certainly wouldn’t have weakened safety regulations for the rail corporations that endanger us.

But he doesn’t know or care beyond the stunts. But hey, maybe he’ll throw some paper towels. Rural voters don’t get much more than that from Trump.
