Yesterday, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis released a new report demonstrating meatpacking industry coordination with the Trump Administration to intentionally force workers to remain in dangerous facilities and prevent the companies from being held to state and local health department regulations during the COVID-19 crisis.
For two years, reporting has been sounding the alarm that meatpacking giants were stacking the deck and placing profits over workers’ lives: “Meatpackers deny workers benefits for COVID-19 deaths, illnesses.” Consolidated meatpacking corporations Cargill, Tyson, JBS, and Smithfield, and National Beef made record profits during the pandemic that continue to today, belying the corporate narrative of a supply chain crisis.
