Columbus, OH— The passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2024 marks a pivotal moment for America’s rural communities because of its reauthorization of the Economic Development Administration (EDA), which ensures continued vital support for economic reinvestment in rural areas that need it most.
The reauthorization enables EDA’s commitment to advancing equity as a top funding priority, recognizing that sustainable economic development must reach all communities, particularly those that have been historically underserved. This commitment has shown real results, with the innovative Recompete Pilot Program delivering 50% of its implementation awards to rural communities, demonstrating the EDA’s dedication to balanced regional development.
The following is a statement by Annie Contractor, Policy Director:
“The EDA’s reauthorization through WRDA 2024 represents a crucial victory for rural America. Today’s reauthorization means more good jobs and more essential services for rural Americans.
This reauthorization ensures the EDA can continue its transformative work in rural communities, from funding critical physical and social infrastructure like broadband, childcare, and transportation access to supporting workforce development programs that create pathways to high-quality, living wage jobs. The agency’s commitment to rural areas is instrumental in addressing the unique challenges our communities face.”
The legislation’s passage advances the goal of rural prosperity by taking steps to build an economy that works for everyone, regardless of zip code.
